Port Kembla Steelworks, established in 1928 by Australian Iron & Steel and now operated by BlueScope, is one of Australia’s largest integrated steel production sites. It includes a blast furnace, basic oxygen steelmaking plant, continuous slab caster, hot strip mill, and supporting facilities covering over 760 hectares. The plant processes imported iron ore and locally sourced coal and limestone, converting them into steel products such as slabs, rails, bars, and plates. Key engineering systems include high-capacity conveyors, electric arc and oxygen furnaces, rolling mills, and onsite rail logistics featuring historic D9-class diesel shunters. Port Kembla also pioneers decarbonisation initiatives—such as hydrogen testing and renewable energy integration—reflecting the global steel industry's shift toward net-zero emissions.
Public guided steelworks tours are offered most Friday and Saturday mornings at 9:30 AM, departing from the Inside Industry Visitor Centre on Springhill Road and returning around midday. Adult tickets are approximately AUD 48; concessions and family rates available. Tours last around 2.5 hours and include bus transit through active plant zones, elevated walkways over the BOS plant and slab caster, and sensory experiences of noise, heat, and motion . The facility provides personal protective equipment and guides provide historical, technical, and sustainability context. Group and school bookings are possible via advance reservation. Visitors should wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing; photography is allowed. The site is accessible by car and public bus; limited parking is available. Tours only run when the plant is operational, so check schedules before booking.
